Shower Door Glass Types, Thickness & Hardware
Glass shower doors must use glazing appropriate for their intended application. Material selection is based on safety requirements, panel dimensions, design, installation conditions and compatible hardware.
Tempered Safety Glass
Tempered safety glass is commonly used for shower doors and enclosures.
It is processed to achieve different strength and breakage characteristics than ordinary annealed glass. However, tempered glass can still break and must be handled and installed correctly.
What Thickness Should Shower Door Glass Be?
The appropriate glass thickness depends on the type of enclosure, glass panel dimensions, support hardware and applicable safety requirements.
Frameless systems may use thicker glass than some framed configurations, but no single thickness is correct for every shower door.
The final specification should be confirmed for the proposed enclosure.
Clear, Frosted and Patterned Shower Glass
Different glass finishes can affect privacy and appearance:
- Clear glass: Provides open sightlines and a bright appearance.
- Frosted glass: Offers additional visual privacy.
- Patterned or textured glass: Adds decorative detail and may provide varying degrees of privacy.
- Specialty glass options: Availability depends on the selected safety-glazing specification and fabrication requirements.
Shower Door Hardware and Finishes
Hardware options may include compatible hinges, handles, clamps, channels, rollers and tracks in selected finishes.
The hardware must be appropriate for the glass weight, panel dimensions, mounting surfaces and intended use.
Are Frameless Shower Doors Completely Leakproof?
Not necessarily. Frameless and other shower enclosures are intended to manage water within the shower area, but their performance depends on the configuration, seals, drainage, threshold and showerhead position.
We review water-containment considerations when discussing an enclosure design. No glass enclosure should be represented as automatically waterproof under every condition.
